Prepare for the Next Boating Season by Selecting a Marina Now

boat speeding toward the marinaIf you own a boat but aren't located directly on the water, you are likely considering the option of a marina. This will save you the hassle of keeping your vessel on your property and then needing to tow it to water when you are ready for an outing. During the season it will be in the water and ready for use. Selecting a marina requires consideration and should be started well in advance of boating season. In many cases you will be required to commit to a certain term so you will want to select wisely. Keep the following in mind as you seek out the appropriate marina for your boat.

Size of Boat

Obviously the size of your boat will impact your marina choices, so that should be the first consideration. Narrow down the marina choices based on the type and size of the boat you will be docking.

Security

It is likely that your boat required a big financial investment and you want that investment protected. Look into the security policies of the marina. Is it possible for non-boat owners to get into the marina? If so, do security personnel patrol the marina regularly?

Weather Protection

Again, protecting your boat is a priority. Verify the marina is in a wave and wind protected area. Ask specific questions about the tide variations and how the water levels vary throughout the year. You do not want your boat to get grounded. Make sure to look at the specific slip you will be renting.

Proximity and Accessibility

You are less likely to use the boat if it is not close to where you live. Limit your marina selection to those near home if possible.

Cleanup

If you desire access to electricity and water to make cleanup easier, verify they are available near your slip. Also check in to see if any extra cost is required. Some marinas will include these options as part of the monthly fee and others will provide the service with a pay-per-use fee.

Off-Season Options

Determine what you will want to do with your boat at the end of the season. Do you want the marina to take care of removing the boat from the water for you? Do they offer facilities to store vessels over the winter on property? If this is important to you, verify that it is available.

Part of enjoying a boat is reducing the hassle associated with taking care of the vessel. If it is overwhelming getting the boat to and from the water, it is less likely you will want to go out on your boat. Many boat owners find that keeping their boat at the marina is an ideal option. Do your homework and identify what it is you are looking for in a marina so you can be confident in your selection.
