Prepare for RV Camping Hazards

Man playing guitarDo you enjoy taking your RV for camping trips in the fall to relax in the cooler weather? The milder temperatures are a common draw, but don’t lose sight of the inherent risks of camping. This article offers tips for safe camping so you don’t have to worry about many of the common camping hazards.

  • Check the weather: Take a look at the extended forecast before heading out so you can pack the right clothes and footwear for the weather conditions. Remember, that the temperature drops overnight so pack an extra sweater for good measure.

  • Sun protection: Even when it’s cooler outside, the sun’s UV rays can still harm your skin. The good news is that it’s much more comfortable to wear long pants and long sleeves during the fall, but remember to apply sunscreen to any exposed skin like your face.

  • Fire safety: Fire pits are great for cooking food, roasting marshmallows, sing-a-longs and spooky stories, but remember to always be cautious while a fire is burning. Contain fire in a metal fire pit or with a ring of large rocks. Before leaving the area or going to sleep, drown the fire and wait until it’s completely extinguished.

  • Avoid the wildlife: It’s important to keep in mind that the wildlife is more interested in eating your food than eating you. To prevent animals from entering your campsite, keep food packed away in sealed containers and stored in the RV fridge. Remember to pick up scraps and properly dispose of trash.

  • Poisonous plant care: Poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac all cause itchy, irritating rashes when they come in contact with your skin. Prevent getting the rashes by wearing long clothing and staying on marked trails. If you do come in contact and break out in a rash, wash the area with hot, soapy water the cover it up so you don’t spread the rash to other parts of your body.

  • Insect protection: Most insect bites are more of a nuisance than an actual danger, but some tick and spider bites can cause serious reactions. Bring bug repellant along and wear long clothing to keep the bugs away. If you notice any bull’s-eye rashes or a fever following a bite, get medical help immediately.

Protecting your RV is just as important as protecting yourself. Call Casey Insurance Group at 888-537-1412 for more information on Florida RV insurance.
