5 Tips for Protecting Your Boat to Reduce Insurance Claims

speedboatBy reducing boat insurance claims, you can also help to reduce the cost of your insurance policy. Making wise decisions about who is on or using your boat, storing it properly and taking steps to operate it the right way can all help. However, keeping your boat safe from theft and vandalism can be the most important steps you take. Here’s how to do so.

#1: Install an Alarm System

Like you might do for your home, an alarm system is one of the most effective options because it is easy to use, an excellent deterrent for would-be thieves and gives you plenty of protection from the thief looking for an easy target. Depending on the type of alarm, you may even have constant monitoring available.

#2: Place it in a Garage Near Your Home

If you have a garage or other covered space close to your home, store your boat there if possible. By putting it close to home and making it harder to access, it becomes much less likely to be stolen or damaged through vandalism. However, you do need to ensure it is properly protected from the elements.

#3: Use Motion Sensors

Another way to reduce risks to your boat is to use an alarm system with motion sensors on it. These will light up when there is someone near the boat or moving on it. That light itself can encourage people to flee, but it can also trigger a silent alarm to you or your family.

#4: Store it in Dry Space

If you park your vessel out of the water, it is very unlikely to be stolen unless you leave it exposed. In most cases, you can find near-to-dock storage facilities that can keep your boat out of the elements and out of the way of danger.

#5: Choose the Right Marina

If you don’t want to move it out of the water, choose the right marina. Learn as much as you can about the location, its risks of theft and vandalism in the past, as well as the security measures in place that can help to protect your boat while it is there.

It takes only a few extra steps to keep your boat safe. But the extra effort can help you save money on boat insurance.

Protect your vessel from risk. Call Casey Insurance Group at (888) 537-1412 for more information on Miami boat insurance.
